Dylan Elias Kurtek, the 27-year-old who went missing from the Santa Rosa Plaza Mall last Thursday, October 10, was sighted the following day in the town of Sonoma’s Mission Highlands neighborhood.
According to his half brother Ian Bryan, Dylan “was seen Friday morning in Sonoma.” A woman from the Mission Highlands neighborhood described Dylan saying ‘he was headed ‘north’” but she told him “that he was just in a neighborhood that circles around way up in the hills.” Dylan “seem confused” at this information and then kept walking. The sighting was not reported until Sunday, October 13th because “the lady had not seen a flyer or known that he was missing”. Ian describes that after seeing a flyer, the witness “was 100% sure” it was Dylan.
The location of the sighting is not far from the same area Dylan walked to 6-8 weeks ago. Ian described how previously he had “walked on foot from Santa Rosa for seven hours. He started walking and continued walking.” Dylan was finally located in Sonoma not far from the Mission Highlands neighborhood at the home of his father’s girlfriend.
Lieutenant Dan Marincik of the Santa Rosa Police Department provided more details about the sighting of Dylan and the general area of Mission Highlands he was seen. The witness described Dylan as “well-kept” and noticed nothing specifically “unusual” about the young man. Dylan was sighted near the intersection of High Road and Lower Road within the Mission Highlands community north of the Sonoma city limits.
Lt. Marincik highlighted some of the unique challenges of Dylan’s case: “he has no working cell phone, no credit/debit cards/EBT cards. When somebody doesn’t have a lot of connections in the area, it can be difficult to track them down.”
Ian shared these concerns describing how Dylan “didn’t have a working phone with GPS this time unlike last time so it’s very very possible that he could’ve got lost and now not know where he was headed.”
SRPD is working in collaboration with Sonoma County Sheriffs Office and several other Northern California law enforcement agencies to track down Dylan. A “Be on the Lookout” bulletin has been issued to neighboring law enforcement agencies and Dylan’s missing status has been submitted to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System.
Lt. Marincik outlined the department’s main investigatory objective at this point in the search for Dylan: “increase the sphere of people that know he’s missing.” SRPD has created a video informing the public of Dylan’s disappearance and shared it on their social media. According to Lt. Marincik, “the more people that are aware he’s missing, the faster we find him.”
Dylan is approximately 5’10’’ and 185lbs. He is reported to be wearing a dark blue/black polo shirt, khaki pants, black shoes, and possibly a black hat embellished with the “Charley’s Philly Cheesesteak” logo.
